There are no whispers in the paintings by newcomer Nina Chanel Abney. The exhibition title, Dirty Wash,
a synonym for gossip and scandal, alludes to the multifarious issues
the artist scrutinizes. The work will wrap around the gallery in full
panoramic immersion delivering social critique on a grand scale. Nina
often asks friends and family to pose for sittings in which she copies
their likeness. Between the start and finish of the painting limbs
disappear, races morph, genders change and faces mask. The varied
surfaces and complex configuration of the massive canvases combine with
fantastic social critique, making the work a powerful force to be
reckoned with.
Nina Chanel Abney recently received her MFA from Parsons. This will be her first solo exhibition.
