The Day's Program

De La Vega, a Modern Prophet, is a well-known community activist and painter is creating a mural on the interior walls of Union Settlement located at 237 East 104th Street. With the assistance of a group of children from the neighborhood the painting will be created as part of ArtCrawl Harlem's reflection on the El Barrio Community.

Jesus "Papoleto" Melendez, a recipient of an Artist for Community Enrichment (ACE) Award, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry, is a founder of the groundbreaking Nuyorican poets' movement. Papoleto is known as the “poet laureate of El Barrio”, and a contemporary of Pedro Pietri.

Participating students reading their works are contributing authors to the anthology “Speaking for Ourselves; The Writing through Reading Series,” a publication of the Adult Education Program of Union Settlement, Ms. Melissa Nieves, Director and Mr. David Nocenti, Executive Director, in collaboration with the 92nd Street Y Unterberg Poetry Center.”
