Naxal Belt

The Naxal Belt in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago Ox-Bow Residency is pleased to reunite Fall 2010 artist residents of Ox-Bow for Post Ox-Bow: Siteless as part of the Bushwick Exhibition Triangle of Alternative (BETA) Spaces Festival. The unique container of Ox-Bow allowed these artists an openness to a radical intervention into their thinking about art-making, where practices re-form, recapitulate, breakdown and collide. Revisiting the historical de-monumentalization of sculpture from mimesis and representation to Krauss' "expanded field," these sculptors work in varying configurations of materials, process, and time; exploiting, elongating, reconfiguring and re-activating the instabilities inherent in the art object.

Jared Buckhiester's haunting glacial sculptures of the "forgotten people", simultaneously pristine and grotesque, roil with a subterranean barely contained perversity. Kazumi Shiho's work exemplifies a palpable apprehension of site, scale, spatial intervention, and the political inscription of post-industrial materials. Gyun Hur inserts performative interventions into rapidly dissolving installations comprised of cut, reassembled and recomposed materials, evoking both the elegiacal and the ritualistic. Ting Ying Han's perpetual nomadism refracts itself into non-sites, non-buildings, and non-places existing at the interstice of transit, displacement, and sitelessness.
