An Artist's Memorial for 911: A Path to Heaven
"I kept having the same dream, of tiny souls trapped in concrete and steel beams. I would wake up with this tremendous sense of urgency about releasing these souls to heaven."
Hee Sung Lee started to work on it, through the only way she knew how: by painting.
''Every night at 2 am, I got up and painted while the world slept, blanketed in quiet dark air. Each stroke I made, I was thinking of the tiny souls I saw in my dreams. Many times I felt I would pass out and die, but I kept on going. The painting took over 5 months to finish."
‘Three Wheels' was finally finished on January 2005 in Hee Sung's studio in Hwasung-City, Korea. Painted on handmade Korean paper Dak Ji with pigments Hee Sung herself mixed, ‘Three Wheels' measures at 59" x 83" large.
"Maybe the painting brought me here," smiles Hee Sung in her new Woodcliff Lake, NJ studio. "Last year I moved to New Jersey with my paintings rolled up under my arms. I didn't know where and how to find a venue close to the site. The memorial museum hasn't started building and I could not wait. Then my framer Elke wrote a letter got a permission to hang my paintings in NYMEX building, especially "Three Wheels.'"
Hee Sung's paintings will be on display at NYMEX through the month of March. And it is open to public by invitation only on its opening day, Friday March 7th from 5pm to 7pm. If you would like to come to the opening to share your stories, please e-mail bowonsim@gmail.com.
