Tiernan Alexander – The Voodoo Living Room
and Tim Eads – Pumping
Opening: August 6th at 6-10 pm
Closing: August 27th at 6-10 pm
GRIZZLY GRIZZLY Gallery
Tim Eads’ Pumping, will be a sculptural installation that centers on inefficient mechanisms. The
work is a combination of formalist structures, silly mechanics, colored lights, drawings, maps,
a hand pump and Gatorade. It is installed using as much of the space as possible to create an
environment that entices the viewer to discover its (ridiculous) function.
While Pumping has elements of the mad inventor at work in his garage, Tiernan Alexander’s
neighboring work, The Voodoo Living Room, is rooted in the domestic household of a shamanistic
everywoman. This arrangement of found objects, altered furniture, insane knick-knacks and
shrunken heads seeks to evoke a combination of the alarming melded with the everyday. The
initially welcoming aura gives way to an atmosphere of aberration full of creepy collections of
petrified ear-like fetuses and knitted porcelain detritus.
Each work is entirely separated but an element of involuntary collaboration will be added after
the opening. During the month of August the two artists (who are also married) will reinstall and
re-interpret each other’s work. The development will culminate in a closing show on August 27th
entitled Husband versus Wife. This joint production attempts to understand how collaboration
and installation choices can alter the meaning and interpretation of any work. Like viral videos in
which movies like “The Shining” are re-cut as comedies, each artist will offer the other a chance to
replay the installation from a completely different point of view and see how thoroughly the work
Tiernan Alexander received her MFA from University of the Arts and Tim Eads received his MFA
from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009. They are both from Texas.
