JHB Gallery is delighted to present an installation of new photographic works by Rebecca Martinez at Bergdorf Goodmanʼs Windows on Fifth Avenue and 58th Street.
Martinezʼ suite of work, collectively titled ʻWoundedʼ, examines our societyʼs quest for physical beauty and the battle against the forces of aging from a unique new angle. Photographing vintage store window mannequins in often lush and intimate detail, Martinez challenges us to see the beauty in the worn, the marked, the used, and the discarded.
Sporting hairstyles and make-up long since consigned to the dustbin of fashion history, Martinezʼ lovingly lit and photographed subjects are nevertheless imbued with a startling physical presence that seems to defy their status as cast-offs in the cycles of style. The work takes on a particular resonance and finds its perfect context in the window of Bergdorfʼs.
Emphasizing their flaws, accumulated over a lifetime of being hauled in and out of store windows, dressed and undressed, shunted to storage, Martinezʼ mannequins ultimately become surrogates for ourselves, and a reminder that each one of us is also uniquely marked and changed as we journey through time.
Rebecca Martinez was born and raised in Los Angeles. An award-winning designer for much of her career, the artistʼs photographic work has been shown in exhibitions at SFMoMA, Lodz Fotofestwal, and Robert Tat Gallery. This will be her first solo presentation in New York.
