THIRTY WORKS NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN THE UNITED STATES
Magnan Metz Gallery and the Cuban Artists Fund are proud to present the momentous exhibition Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight, organized by the Cuban National Dance and Fine Art Museums. The exhibition will be on view through June 12th at 521 West 26th Street.
Curated by Heriberto Cabezas, Corina Matamoros and Yandro Miralles from Havana, Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight offers an impressive selection of the prima ballerina’s influence on the Cuban visual arts spanning more than six decades. The exhibition consists of thirty (30) works of art created by Cuban artists each presenting their unique style and interpretation of this dynamic personality in Cuban culture. Highlights range from a 1941 drawing by Wilfredo Lam as a token of his friendship with Alicia Alonso, to contemporary artists such as photographer Adonis Flores. Styles vary from a Rene Portocarrero Baroque “Presence of Alicia Alonso” (1970) to Ernesto Rancano’s minimalist conceptual “Assoluta” (2010); from Mariano Rodriguez’s tropical sensualism to Tomas Sanchez’s spiritual poetry; from the introspective Rocio Garcia to Manuel Mendive’s colorful Afro-Caribbean world. A selection of these works were first exhibited in 2008 at the National Museum of Fine Arts during the last Havana International Ballet Festival. For this show, important artworks by young artists were added to present new discourses between generations of artists working in new media and techniques.
