OTHER AS ANIMAL

Curated by April Gornik

June 4 – August 6, 2010

Opening Reception: June 3, 6-8 PM

Danese is pleased to announce the group exhibition Other as Animal, curated by April Gornik. The opening reception will be held Thursday, June 3, 6-8 PM.

Inspired by her admiration and love of animals, Gornik’s exhibition presents a range of artists who investigate the psyches, the identities and the implicit wisdom of “animals behaving in their own complete worlds.” As Gornik explained, “I began looking for art that represented another way of appreciating animals and what happens when we find ourselves, while projecting onto them, somehow aligned with their powerfully distant yet familiar-seeming natures.”

Each carefully chosen work, reflects the mind and spirit of ‘the other.’ Instead of casting the animals as humans see them, these paintings, drawings and sculptures seek to uncover the hidden ethos and the often inaccessible and unseen world of animals. Situated in both their natural environment and ones imposed by humans, viewers are asked to envision the animal’s “imagined consciousness,” transporting themselves into a familiar yet unknown realm.

The exhibition includes work by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, Sally Gall, Diane Andrews Hall, Julie Heffernan, Catherine Howe, David Humphrey, Johan Simen, Jill Musnicki, John O'Reilly, Jean Pagliuso, Shelley Reed, Jane Rosen, Amy Ross, Shawn Spencer, Erick Swenson, Lucy Winton, Daisy Youngblood.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953, April Gornik received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. April Gornik lives and works in New York.

The exhibition is accompanied by an online catalogue, which can be found at www.danese.com. For further information please contact Carol Corey 212.223.2227.
