ONE NIGHT HAITI RELIEF FUNDRAISER AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT TAKING PLACE SATURDAY, MAY 8, 2010 FROM 8PM-11PM.
New York, New York – May 8, 2010 – A distinguished group of photographers have joined together to produce an evening of music, traditional Haitian food, a generous raffle, drinks, and powerful reportage of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The one night fundraiser, entitled “Sonje” (Creole for Remember), will showcase an exhibition of work by photojournalists, Jonathan Auch, Michael Hicks, and Misha Tulek along with featured works from James Nachtwey, Lynsey Addario, and Stephen Katz. All photographic prints will be up for auction with print sale proceeds donated to Longchamp Charities and Partners In Health.
The dire circumstances caused by the January 12th, 7.0 earthquake continues to threaten the welfare of the Caribbean nation of Haiti.
The seasonal rains have begun, and Haitians living in tent cities are at high risk. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, “21 out of the 500 makeshift settlements are considered high risk for flooding, landslides or overcrowding. Seven are home to 150,000 to 200,000 people and are deemed life-threatening." Rain is considered a source of life, but due to the potential for flash flooding and the spread of infectious disease, rain in Haiti will most certainly become a source of death.
The daunting tasks of clearing rubble, restoring public utilities, rebuilding basic civic and governmental institutions, and proper handling of the deceased continues to be a challenge. The population of orphaned children has risen from 380,000 prior to the quake, to an undetermined number.
Haiti still deserves the attention and assistance of the international community. The media story may have ended, however the plight of the Haitian people continues.
The exhibit and fundraiser will be held on Saturday May 8th, 2010 at Sacred Gallery NYC located at 424 Broadway (between Canal and Howard) in SoHo. This event is open to the public. A suggested donation of $10 dollars is requested upon entry. Work will remain on display through May 9th.
