SUBVERSIVE
APRIL 16 – JULY 11
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 7-11PM
FILM SCREENINGS: APRIL 22-24, 7:00PM
ART FOR CHANGE GALLERY, 1699 LEXINGTON AVENUE, LOWER LEVEL
Art for Change is pleased to present Subversive, a group art exhibition guest curated by Ryan Joseph, featuring artworks by Joseph Borzotta, Gerard Gaskin, Monty Leman, Ryan Joseph, Jessica Rosen, and Don Spiro. The art exhibition, combined with a series of film screenings, will explore the seemingly “benevolent” appeal of subcultures, and point out the parallels that exist among the subcultures of Burlesque, the Ball Scene, Roller Derby, Lucha Libre, among others. This mini-art festival will look at alternative conceptions of "masculinity" and "femininity" in spaces that redefine the role of gender and sexuality in a hetero-normative society. We will discover how these subcultures relate to each other and sociopolitical movements, and how they influence mainstream attitudes and culture.
