The artists in More Than Naked disguise neither their materi als nor their methods - cardboard is cardboard\, a rolled carpet is very mu ch a rolled carpet. Even when something is made to look like something else \, say a lump of graphite is carved to look like a handkerchief\, there is no attempt by the artist to make you think the carved handkerchief is an ac tual handkerchief - the graphite retains its dark intractable nature\, its "graphite-ness". However\, this work is not rarefied or detached from the a udience – it transcends its materials and engages us. How so? The artists a re using materials we're familiar with from our own lives - cardboard\, pin k insulation\, carpeting\, but they're using it in unfamiliar ways. This ca n be both disconcerting and amusing (and there's a lot of humor in this wor k). It's like discovering a friend's hidden talent - a joyful surprise whic h makes you look at your friend differently\, with greater affection\, but also with a sense of wonder.
