The opening reception, which is free and open to all, will be held Sunday, July 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The 20 colorful beaded sculptures comprising Paradise Pieces will hang high from the Museum walls, forming an ethereal garden surrounded by ascending beaded white vines. The 3D quality of Daniels’ art affords Museum visitors the feeling of being immersed in the work. “You enter the room and feel like you’re in the middle of the picture,” Daniels said, explaining what she hopes visitors will experience from the exhibition. “It’s a piece of paradise, and dreamlike.”

Daniels’ years working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art surrounded by Asian and Islamic art deeply influenced her work. And, while they may sound like tongue twisters, the names of Daniels’ beaded sculptures are terms associated with heaven in different religions and paradise in different languages: Akanistha Arrangement (heaven in Tibetan Buddhism) and Swarga Loka (the Hindi name for heaven), for instance.

“The titles derived from words for paradise and heaven from many languages and religions are contemplation on how this idea extends deeply into human history and broadly across many cultures and religions,” Daniels noted. “These paradisiacal gardens represent the human need to counter our acts of destruction by creating and cultivating beauty.”

Her work is very labor intensive, as she builds dense compositions by stringing each bead onto a wire and then weaving the strips into a whole intricate form. One particularly large piece took about two years to finish.

Daniels grew up in Huntington, West Virginia. Bad at sports and dyslexic, Daniels was encouraged by her parents to pursue her love for art. She studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and later earned a Master’s Degree in painting from Johnson State College in Vermont.

Daniels won the 2012 Claire Weiss Emerging Artist Award. During the past two years, she has created six public art installations including ones at Joyce Kilmer Park and St. Nicholas Park. But perhaps her most challenging outdoor piece was her first: An installation woven into a 700-foot-long chain link fence in the Wall Street District in the biting January cold. Daniels will create her first outdoor beaded installation after work on the Hunterdon Art Museum’s new terrace is completed.
Tue, 09 Jul 2013 00:10:17 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list - Ludlow 38 - July 14th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38 is pleased to present Celluloid Brushes: An Anthology of the Filmic Perception of the Artist from 1942 till Today, a project by Etablissement d’en Face.

“Van Gogh! http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Group Show - Friedman Benda - July 16th, 2013 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Friedman Benda is pleased to announce And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music, a group exhibition curated by Thorsten Albertz, from July 16 to August 17, 2013. From the outgoing and flamboyant to the introverted and lonesome, the show assesses the culture of nightlife - its customs and expectations - through the art it has provoked from the 1970s to the present. An unconventional opening celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 16 from 6-9pm at Friedman Benda, 515 West 26th Street.

In the exhibition, a diverse group of artists explore the bacchanalian nights and elusive nocturnal moments that define the collective party experience. It is a setting where routines of the day are cast aside to make way for an alternative set of rituals. From New York City’s historic Studio 54 to Berlin’s open air ‘Love Parade,’ club culture elicits a complex web of emotions, unique to each participant though foreign to none. Intrigued by the sensational nature of the party, each artist captures an affecting moment in its evolution from the questioning of identity in Nan Goldin’s polaroids of young men preparing to go out to Nicolas Provost’s video play with synthetic atmospheric manipulations.

An overarching homage to the frivolity of the party and its influence in contemporary art, viewers to the exhibition are greeted by Andy Warhol’s Studio 54 painting in proximity to Bill Beckley’s photo “The Bathroom” (1977) which directly contrasts with Warhol’s commercial themes by capturing an intimate bathroom stall encounter. A generation later, Agathe Snow, who famously hosted a 96-hour dance marathon for the 2008 Whitney Biennial, turns attention once again to celebratory excess. Here, her commissioned work places a disco ball at the centerpiece of the exhibition, casting a playful, ever-changing light across all neighboring works.

Some artists have chosen to turn their eye to the indecent. In his work “Spitting On Dick”, Wolfgang Tillmans blatantly relinquishes any previously held inhibitions, emphasizing the voyeuristic aspect of the show, while Cecily Brown, exploring the wonders of foreplay, invites an audience. Natalie Frank chronicles a subconscious, primal instinct, painting dense environments that play host to characters acting out sinful fantasies.

Touching on memory and signifiers, Rosson Crow and Andreas Gurksy transport the viewer to familiar yet manipulated environments. Crow’s work deftly plays to our curiosity and voyeuristic tendencies, highlighting the feelings of isolation and dissociation that sometimes arise in the midst of a seemingly happy celebration. Gursky addresses the experience of the individual who gets lost within the crowd; his monumental Love Parade photograph hones in on the defining celebration of the 90s that found tragic conclusion in the 2010 stampede at Dortmund.

For the opening of the exhibition, key nightlife elements will be replicated in an unconventional gallery set-up. The evening will feature a live DJ and special performance under the glittering light of a central disco ball. Be prepared to show your ID at the door for this 18-and-up reception.
Mon, 24 Jun 2013 22:38:31 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Group Show - Monya Rowe Gallery - July 16th, 2013 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
The event is free and open to the public on a first-come first-served basis.

The gallery is honored to have Paul Schrader present an exclusive clip from his upcoming film The Canyons (written by Bret Easton Ellis and stars Lindsay Lohan). Each of these works contrast non-literal elements and ornamental details with generic signs of dogs, birds, ducks, leaves and trees. Devoid of narrative context, these mysterious protagonists seem to float in otherworldly dreamscapes; although they take center stage, they remain without clearly defined roles. While allowing for references ranging from pop-culture to childhood fantasy, these paintings spring from a place enticingly foreign, primarily rooted in the artist’s unconscious.

All of these works are rendered in Goldberg’s signature style of the past decade. When viewed from afar, shapes appear to be graphic and clearly delineated. Upon closer inspection, one notices natural imperfections driven by a sense of urgency, immediacy, and unusual poetic intention. The works are charged with multiple dotted lines that weave through the space with the sensibility of musical punctuations. The contrast between an overall rhythmic pattern and distinct single shapes serves as a metaphor for the dialogue between microscopic and macroscopic realities. In a recent review, John Yau described the physical effect of Goldberg’s paintings as follows: “We cannot be sure if the paintings are directed toward our sight or our body. We can see into the space, but can we imagine ourselves physically entering it? If so, what size would we be? And what does this tell us about the scale of the things within the painting? We have fallen down the rabbit hole, like Alice. The diminutive and the monumental keep changing places. It is along this seam of speculation that all kinds of contradictions begin to announce themselves.”

Glenn Goldberg has exhibited extensively in the United States. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; the Rose Art Museum Waltham, MA; the National Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; and West Virginia University Art Collection, among others.
Fri, 12 Jul 2013 15:28:23 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list - MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) - July 17th, 2013 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Since its beginnings, the MoMA Library has housed several collections of artists’ files and subject files, which contain assorted printed ephemera like announcement cards, press clippings, posters, and flyers. These materials illustrate an elaborate range of artistic activities and can contain unique elements from an artist’s practice. This two-part exhibition gathers a sample of innovative printed invitations, small posters, and flyers from the early 1960s to the present. The selection traces ways in which artists, designers, and galleries have used invitation cards and other printed announcements as a part of the staging of conceptual works, installations, performances, and other time-based events and screenings. This diverse grouping of ephemera explores the various, surprising ways that we have been invited to experience art.
Sun, 07 Jul 2013 22:59:12 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Alan W. In addition to digitizing a portion of MWF Video Club’s collection (currently housed in a storage unit in Staten Island), the “XFR STN” will be used to preserve various materials from the New Museum’s own rich archive (including formats such as U-matic and audio tapes). In keeping with the original policies of the MWF Video Club, “XFR STN” will be open to any artist-originated moving image or born-digital materials whose formats have become obsolete. The exhibition/lab will operate publically, informally exhibiting the material that is transferred, as well as rendering it available online through archive.org, an internet library whose mission includes offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format.

Consistent with the dictum “distribution is preservation,” the project argues for circulation as a mode of conservation. “XFR STN” will serve as a collection and dissemination point for artist-produced content, as well as a hub for information about these past projects (including production materials and personal recollections). The project is both a pragmatic public service and an activity as metaphor: an opportunity to present aspects of a mediatic production process in continuous dynamic transformation.
Sun, 07 Jul 2013 23:25:13 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Catharine Ahearn, Sarah Cromarty, Michael John Kelly, Lisa Madonna, Rimas Simaitis - Benrimon Contemporary - July 18th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
In the dead of summer, the hours grow longer, sight blurs, the heat pressurizes thoughts and visions, time begins to bend. Direction is lost. We race into the past and into the future at equal speeds, obeying only rules detached from reality, severed from physics. In the darkness we feel our way across an infinite wasteland, through magic, prophecy, science fiction, folklore, and epic jams, for a pathway to understanding our moment. Believing in glory, and relishing absurdity. The cosmic wave to the future cuts out from beneath our feet and we are suspended in thought, in time and in space, in light and in heat. Searching for a sense of completion, the promise of a new horizon, and someone who has access to a pool.
Tue, 09 Jul 2013 01:35:33 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Susannah Ray - Bonni Benrubi Gallery - July 18th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Images from hurricane Sandy, with audio by Jen Poyant

"How high did the water come at your place?" was the common refrain among neighbors, friends, even strangers, across the Rockaways in the days after Sandy struck.

The storm's seventeen foot surge pushed across the peninsula, leaving behind water-logged basements and first floors, their remnants piled in front of home after home, block after block. The boardwalk, which nearly ran the length of the peninsula, was severed from its concrete foundation, slammed into shorefront homes and deposited on cars. It was an unprecedented disaster in the Rockaways and countless other coastal communities, where the scale and scope of the trauma, suffering and uncertainty would unfold slowly in the following weeks and months.

Every person had a storm story.

People told tales of survival, digging out, rebuilding, and hoping for things to get back to normal. Each person's story reflects a long history of settlement along the peninsula, from the close-knit Breezy Point community on the west end all the way to Far Rockaway on the east. The floodwaters united the disparate populations of the peninsula through shared trauma and struggle, yet as they receded and the clean-up dragged on, longstanding differences resurfaced.

What are the Wild Waves Saying documents the lingering aftermath of the storm and the individuals that comprise the complex community of the Rockaways. The audio interviews and photographic portraits delve into each subject's storm story and uncover the deep connections to the land and the sea.

The Rockaways are at a turning point, one faced by ocean-front communities in the age of climate change. Questions of rebuilding and future development loom, while lives are sustained by memories of golden summers and the boardwalk that once bound the Rockaways together.

-----

What are the Wild Waves Saying: Storm Stories from the Rockaways is a collaboration between senior WNYC radio producer Jen Poyant and photographer Susannah Ray. They are both Rockaway residents.
Mon, 01 Jul 2013 22:26:14 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list - Denise Bibro Fine Art - July 18th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Denise Bibro Fine Art, 529 West 20th Street, Chelsea, NYC is pleased to announce "Summer Selections," a large group exhibition of gallery and invited guest artists of diverse mediums and genres.

Fri, 12 Jul 2013 03:34:24 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Alain Biltereyst, Robert Otto Epstein, Lukas Geronimas, Elizabeth Jaeger - Jack Hanley Gallery- New York - July 18th, 2013 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Robert Otto Epstein is interested in what he likes to call ‘chemical aesthetics’, the painterly process of reducing a thing into self-sufficient and repeatable units. Starting with a hand-drawn grid, he follows a chosen pattern and moves from bottom to top and right to left. His current work consists of paintings and drawings on paper based on turn of the century French and German filet lace patterns, design-based imagery imbedded in instructional diagrams, and harkens back to the computerized digitization of 1980s era 8-bit schemata. Alain Biltereyst’s plywood painting series touch on various abstract geometric styles, from Mondrian and Malevich to Oiticica or Frank Stella and Josef Albers. If these artists were about reduction of form and pure painting, Biltereyst’s abstractions employ references to contemporary everyday life and evoke familiar shapes: logos on currency, advertising on the sides of trucks, or fences on a country road.
Lukas Geronimas’s practice merges artwork and display, purposefully tipping toward the purely decorative or, conversely, purely functional. Although concerned with precision in craft, Geronimas often includes incidental surface details such as bits of tape or paint along the edges of a work. Discomfiting and tongue-in-cheek, Jaeger’s life-size plaster and ceramic sculptures of mostly women have a refreshing sense of humor and candor around the female identity. Never neglecting the fine details, her figures sport silky hair, appliquéd eyeballs and eyelashes, and hand-painted finger and toe nails.
The uncanny comes from within, and the subliminal from without, but the two share the same area in the back of the mind. Within that space, various shapes, smells and textures run together.
Tue, 16 Jul 2013 00:11:29 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/ny/Events/list Maxine Helfman, Priya Kambli, Chang Kyun Kim, Manuel Cosentino, Peter Croteau - KLOMPCHING GALLERY - July 18th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

KLOMPCHING GALLERY is pleased to announce FRESH 2013, the gallery's annual summer exhibition, showcasing new voices in contemporary photography.

There will be an Opening Reception on Thursday, July 18, 6pm to 8pm.

FRESH 2013 is co-curated by the distinguished collector/curator W.M. Eight modest, sequenced photographs, lead the viewer from a position of spectator to that of participant.

With his Mountain series, Peter Croteau brings order to spaces of waste that result from urban sprawl. With these large-scale color photographs, the artist touches upon the way people shape land and its use, as well as the ideologies that define the way we understand natural forms.

Photographs of boys in dresses, by Maxine Helfman, appear to be uncomplicated–almost whimsical–studio portraits. However, they bring to our attention the double meanings that emerge from something as simple as a piece of clothing.

Priya Kambli re-works black and white historical family snapshots, that have been previously altered, through perceptively violent incisions. Inspired by the aesthetics of those physical marks, her own alterations are intended as modifications of their original narrative.

The subconscious state in the formation of certain memories, forms the subject of Chang Kyun Kim’s unique artworks, consisting of photographic fragments adhered to canvas.
