If a visit to Asher’s exhibition has inspired or renewed your passion for institutional critique, then you will no doubt find dealer Emi Fontana’s viral art project “Women in the City” of interest. What better way to critique institutional mandates than to avoid them altogether, Fontana seems to say with this series of public works by Cindy Sherman, Jenny Holzer, Louis Lawler, and Barbara Kruger. Spread across the city, installed in sites as diverse as the intersection of Hollywood and Highland, the Huntington Gardens, and LACMA, this project is not only impressive in scope but also acute in its appropriation of the exhibition format to the sprawling, untamed urbanistic logic of Los Angeles. - Nico Machida (*Image: Louise Lawler, Women in the City, February - March, 2008; Birdcalls, 1972/1981, Installation at Huntington Botanical Gardens, 2008, San Marino, Courtesy of the artist and West of Rome.)
