A Look at Amanda Ross-Ho and Kirsten Stoltmann
by Nicholas Weist

Amanda Ross-Ho and Kirsten Stolmann are heterosexual women friends who are practicing artists with studios in the same building in Los Angeles, CA. Their show Vaginal Rejuvenation explores all of these things, in an amalgam of collage, sculpture, and photographs.

Ross-Ho and Stolman have known each other for ten years, and this bond is examined, parsed, and repurposed in the show. They have cannibalized each others’ work to make new pieces and “vandalized” or otherwise marked each others’ work. But the show is more “about” collaboration than a collaboration itself; each piece has a definitive author, and is clearly identifiable as such. Ross-Ho interrogates the craft process as it relates to feminine and American identity, while Stoltmann uses pornographic and stock American iconography in collages to explore similar ideas. By appropriating themselves, the artists also question the roles of authorship and agency in these bright, densely layered, and visually intense new bodies of work.
