The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) seeks a Design Director to play a key role in conceptualizing and coordinating the MCA’s presentation of itself and its program via diverse media to ensure strong visual identity, which strives to keep the MCA in vanguard of peer institutions. S/he will ensure quality and production of exhibition and collection catalogues; printed, electronic, and internet-based materials; advertisements; museum products, and facility and exhibition signage in cooperation with museum staff and external consultants.
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design required and a master’s degree in design preferred. Background with coursework in art history including 20th and 21st century art is desirable. Minimum of seven to ten years of experience in all aspects of graphic design for diverse print and digital media, including publications required. Museum experience as well as connections within the publishing field is highly desirable. Candidate must have staff management experience and strong interpersonal skills. Strong knowledge of interaction between publishing and marketing and demonstrated ability to conceive and execute strategic marketing, publishing, and digital media plans required. Current understanding of design issues and trends required. Active participant in the local, national, and international design community highly desirable. Ability to make informed recommendations and decisions to achieve institutional goals on schedule and within budget required. Proven competence as a project manager with ability to set priorities, anticipate demands, and coordinate stringent deadlines required. General physical mobility throughout offices, ability to operate office equipment, and ability to spend long periods of time working on computer screen required. Full-time schedule is 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required.
