ArtSlant Exhibitions: Douglas Mandry's Promised Land

Douglas Mandry, Montagne I (Ponction, volutes), 2013

ArtSlant Prize Exhibitions presents Douglas Mandry, the first artist to be selected for our ArtSlant Prize exhibition series, 2014. Mandry's photography is in response to the standardized representation of the landscape and the possible loss of material references in the digital era. In an effort to get closer to the process of analog retouching, his photographs are first printed, then reworked, exploiting their physical properties; the print is punctured, rubbed, modified by adding light and smoke. Mandry plays with scale and perception. Captured by the camera, these experiments transfigure traditional representations of the landscape, oscillating between fantastic and apocalyptic visions, critical and sublime conditions, reckless and romanticized nature.

Born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1989, Mandry graduated from the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne University in visual communication and photography. There, he developed an interest in the capacities of photography to modify reality. Visual and physical interventions signify that photography is no longer an end in and of itself, but a raw material to work with, bringing into question the status of the photograph as object.

Douglas Mandry lives and works between Zürich and Lausanne, Switzerland.

ArtSlant is proud to present Douglas Mandry: Promised Land at 202 S State ST in the Chicago Loop. Promised Land is made possible through assistance from Pop-Up Art Loop, Hahnemühle FineArt, and Latitude Chicago
