Dogs to Diplomats: President Bush Reveals His Series of Portraits of World Leaders.
by Max Nesterak

When we joked about Putin becoming a painter for April Fools, we considered photoshopping his face onto a photo of President George W. Bush standing next to one of his paintings. Then we decided it was too easy. Well, Bush is still a bush-league painter and it looks like the joke is still on Putin. Today on the Today Show, the former president unveiled his latest series of paintings. If you thought he may have peaked early with first exhibition of dogs, you were wrong. Bush’s series of portraits of world leaders are delightfully bad.

His mom thinks so too. On The Today Show when Bush’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager revealed her dad’s favorite portrait of his father to Barbara Bush, the former first lady exclaimed, “That’s my husband?!” She was probably just kidding because she said she liked it very much. But when they asked her if she would let her son do a portrait of her, she said absolutely not. (Two slams and you’re not joking anymore, girl…)

Our favorite may be the one of he did of Putin exuding the mystique of an evil world leader with a face like a carton of Marlboro Lights. Intentional? Does Putin even smoke? In talking with his daughter Jenna Bush Hager about his relationship with Putin, he revealed he may be holding on to an old grudge. “As you know, our dear dog Barney, who had a special place in my heart — Putin dissed him and said, ‘You call it a dog?’’’ Maybe it’s best not to reopen old wounds on dead dogs lying…

While his artistic vision leaves something to be desired, we commend Bush’s effort (and chutzpah). Yet with such obvious care put into “capturing the unique personalities” of each of his subjects, it’s a wonder how Bush let diplomatic relations sink so low during his administration.

20131220003206-2008_hard_times The Naive World of George W. Bush
When I first heard the rumors that leaked images had been released on the internet of George W Bush's paintings...paintings that he has been doing since retiring from office...I thought it was a joke. I checked it out on Google and I'll be darned if they weren't down right brilliant! Being someone who has followed the scene of Naïve and Self-Taught Art since the early 90's, I couldn't help but salivate at the Naïve works he had done. His work is reminiscent of the works of Grandma Moses and Horace Pippin and I think if they were placed in the right setting with the right group of Naïve and Self-Taught artists, his work could...and probably will hang in the halls of Art History

Bush's paintings? Good, bad or indifferent? Politics aside (Hard to do for some of us) his paintings are....OK. They could be more abstract with a few more brush strokes and maybe in a year or two OMG George W might develop into an abstract artist. As we all know conservatives see no art in abstract. Then again, they rarely go to art gallerias nor museums. But let's give the man a chance to grow. If this is his first show (I believe so) then it is a fair start.
