Danyel Ferrari (lives in New York)

...For my thesis I am working on the second floor, in a room delineated by mid-twentieth century modular metal walls that were often used to construct managersʼ offices in industrial buildings. The project I had originally proposed involved performing a series of actions with objects, drawing on one of the MFA buildingʼs historic uses as a factory and training facility. In preparing the space I discovered that the floor in the room, now painted in layers of grey paint, was once covered in linoleum. I began lifting the old flooring and exposing the concrete under-floor, which bears the marks of the buildingʼs previous lives; painted sections delineating stations and pathways. I have raised the corner of this linoleum floor, making it into the roof of a pitched structure that recalls the mound and its twin/opposite, the crater. Beneath the surface there is a kind of underworld, a cave which can only be experienced by walking around and turning back. Belying the organizing singularity of the architecture hides the fragmented chaos swept underneath.
