Nobutaka Aozaki (b. 1977, Kagoshima, Japan)

My work is often made or activated by other people. This method questions the dichotomy, as well as creates an opportunity for a covert exchange between what is considered artistic and non-artistic labor. By making with others I also seek to complicate the notion of authorship, and escape the solid identity of a mere author of an artwork. I am interested in the tension between how much an artist makes and how much an artist doesn't make in production of an artwork.

Production of my art works happens simultaneously with the most mundane everyday interactions in New York City life, such as grocery shopping, passing by a street portraitist, or buying a cup of coffee and my works becomes like diaries or measuring devices of my everyday life.
