G-mart isn’t new to the neighborhood, previously having been located in a shabby storefront on Milwaukee St. near Spaulding. Having moved to their current location on Kedzie about a year ago now, they’ve been enjoying their new digs, in a more put together, better fitting space, which provides excellent visibility from the Logan Square Blue Line stop, and is conveniently located next door to neighborhood darling, the Mexican restaurant El Cid.
Online since 1995, their sister space in Champaign, IL actually opened first in 1996. The Chicago store is the warehouse store for both locations however, so it has a lot on hand at all times. If you’re looking for something that isn’t out, it’s worth seeing if someone can check for it in back.
They carry everything from Chester Gould era Dick Tracy’s to Stan Lee Spiderman compilations, as well as all the latest issues of the big name publishers you’d expect, and a healthy number of graphic novels, plus sundry gaming stuff, like 18 sided die and Magic cards. The righteous gender equality of their titles is also endearing—for every superhero ending in ‘man’, there’s a She-Hulk, Super Woman, Bat Woman, and Spider Girl nearby on the shelf.
Their customer service is outstanding—it’s easy to tell this is a shop owned and operated by true comic fans who really know their stuff and want to share their enthusiasm with you, instead of protect their comics from you.
With an active mail order business shipping subscriptions world wide, take advantage of your ability to walk in, dig through some discount bins, and score finds you didn’t even know we were looking for.
