Life Insurance to Dance On

It’s a life-affirming day: the sun is out, the air is chilly, and the centre of Delhi is buzzing like a cicada. There are folks eating from street stalls, some hop busily on and off the metro, others shop, or simply walk. Music emanates from the Life Insurance Corporation’s building as five dancers from San Francisco prepare themselves to dance, parallel to the surface of the building: defying laws natural and man-made. As they fly and flounder across the semi-reflective grids of the structure, they appear as stars in the daylight, a metaphor for all that seems impossible and for the beauty and paradoxes of space and the unknown world. These climber-dancers wear harnesses, roped in to secure rigging at the top of the building, and appear to swing off of the building in slow motion, eliciting cries of awe and childish wonder. It is, of course, ironic that an act so circus-like be undertaken outside of offices that offer life insurance.  It is this sense of danger, however, that elevates them above the audience. After an hour of watching these nimble people fly and dance in the sky, perhaps the most sublime aspect of the show is the moment their sure feet touch earth: a reminder of the inherent stability and promise of being grounded.
