The idea of online art projects have always peaked interest in me. These spaces sit in between private and public space. There is a certain power to these spaces that allow for things to be published and seen by many people almost instantaneously (of course assuming that there is an audience). The Two Jonnys’ gallery have put together a new online art initiative called Wacky Backy. Every month the gallery invites an artist to create a wallpaper backdrop to their web-page. What I find interesting about this project is the fact that the audience has the choice to engage with the work or not. If one is purely looking for information on the gallery they can navigate the webpage without seeing the Wacky Backy commission. Like opening the doors to a gallery, the viewer needs to click onto the Wacky Backy link in order to activate the specially designed background pattern. The site still functions as a white wall gallery space. It is a nice way to mirror the dynamics of a gallery-space to an online world without resorting to the usual cringing virtual tours that some national museums have adopted.
