Hee Sung Lee says she is not a painter.  She did not go to an art school, and certainly never imagined she would be painting.  What she did one day, was to start writing the letter Om in an impulse.  Over and over and over again.  And her Om evolved in to a mandala.

An impulse, she says.  Or is it a destiny.  In a trance induced after a sweat lodge experience, Hee Sung once said "I am Om."  She believes contained Om symbol is life force.  She speaks from her experience, having had several near death encounters but came alive through the sound of Om rising from deep inside her body.

Big Fish by Hee Sung Lee

Big Fish does not resemble any traditional mandalas as we know of.  It is unlike anything we've seen.  First glance it looks like an organism or a cell.  Then as you take a closer look, the whole universe starts to unravel.

Even if you don't know anything about mandala or om, this is a beautiful work filled with intricate design and details.  And her colors seem to illuminate from within, for a big celebration of life and being.
