Endangered Species or Timeless Genre
by Henry Bateman
In his book Art as Existence (The Artist's Monograph and Its Project) arts scholar and writer Gabriele Guercio poses the question, is the artist's monograph an endangered species or a timeless genre? As far as The Editions|Artists Book Fair is concerned ‘a timeless genre’ must be the answer.
Now in its 12 edition the Fair has grown in size and stature since its 1998 beginning, and this year will be hosting over 50 contemporary publishers and dealers from around the world. From New York to Tokyo, from London to Johannesburg, hundreds of artists are being presented in the latest prints, multiples and artists' books. From Friday the 6th of November through to Sunday 8th the second floor of X Initiative, at 548 West 22nd Street, the fair’s printed material will be augmented with site-specific projects, exhibitions, artists, performances and weekend events. Including invited artists who will design a limited edition multiple that is produced daily on site and vended from rolling carts dim sum style. The proceeds from the Editions|Artists Book Fair opening night preview on Thursday November 5, from 6 to 9pm, will go to PS1 Contemporary Art Center’s Annual Exhibition Fund. The $50 tickets are available from www.ps1.org and agnes b locations throughout New York City. Further information about the Editions|Artists Book Fair can be found at their web site, here. |
