Hanging Fire, the idiom used to suggest a critical delay, is the first museum show in America at the Asia Society in New York of contemporary art from Pakistan. The country, created by partition in 1947, constitutes the second largest Muslim population in the world. Subject to ongoing and complex forces that result in quotidian tenuousness and violence, a critical mass of creative individuals, mainly in the theater and visual arts, is able to continue to produce. This exhibition, curated... [more]

Group Show at The Kitchen September 10th - October 31st
Posted 9/19/09

There is a ratio I used to hear a lot as a student, that what you put in is what you get out. In this metaphysical bank where effort is deposited and results get withdrawn nobody ever mentioned the possibility of accruing any interest, but it is possible. Interest, I learned on my last trip to the bank, grows in proportion to the amount of risk one takes. This updated ratio—(Effort + Risk) / time = Interest rate on Results—is helpful to keep in mind when engaging documents and vestiges of durational action and live even... [more]

Keren Cytter, Luke Fowler at X Initiative September 13th - October 17th
Posted 9/13/09

Launched in April of this year in the old Dia:Chelsea building, X is a terminal, year-long, non-profit initiative. It is the collaborative effort of a long list of global heavyweights in the art world, ranging from commercial gallerists like Elizabeth Dee (X’s founder) and Paula Cooper, to artists like Cindy Sherman and Ryan Trecartin, and multi-taskers like Matthew Higgs. In an economy where ‘pop ups’ seem to be the most marketable approach to any venture, X Initiative seems to be... [more]

BRIC Rotunda Gallery is a brainy, politically-minded art space in the heart of downtown Brooklyn. Commencing BRIC's 2009-2010 season, Status Report is a knowledgeably curated show about Mexican immigration and borders—the first show of its caliber in New York City. The show includes meaningful conceptual and visual artwork based upon real life labor and border issues concerning immigrants and their movement in North America.    Erika Harrsch's installatio...   The Pictures Generation, 1974–1984 is the first major museum exhibition to focus on a highly influential group of somewhat affiliated artists that were one of the first generations raised with popular television and an abundance of disposable products. This upbringing, coupled with the rising popularity of M.F.A. academic training that often discussed Barthian post-structuralism, produced a generation of artists wanting to deconstruct visual culture by appropriating its... Cognition Factor by Propaganda Anonymous "Cognition Factor" is the brainchild of the South African filmmaker and cyberpunk Mike Kawitzky. In 64 minutes of documentary Katwitzky manages to evoke some intriguing thoughts from roughly twenty great thinkers revolving around five questions; Is humanity evolving towards something higher or are we doomed to extinction? What is consciousness? Is God a myth? Will a fusion between science and spiritually occur? and What happens when we die? Among th... [more]
