The Metropolitan Museum's Ratti Center Textile Exhibit showcases a dozen or so exquisite lace pieces. Highlights include a cravat made for the wedding of Louis the XIV's grandson in the finest of French needle lace with a lavish hunting scheme featuring two children beneath a tree and a plethora of dogs hidden within lacy foliage.. One stunning piece is a border that has three dimensional flowers with layers of petals resembling Gros Point, but made during the late 19th century. Most Americ... [more]

The New York Photo Review (August 2012) Fresh: The Wall—Ed Barnas
Tabitha Soren, "Running 000329" 2011
The summer show, “Fresh: The Wall/The Page/The Internet”, at Klompching Gallery highlights the work of five contemporary fine art photographers chosen for their consistent vision and strong viewpoint by collector Fred Bidwell and gallery co-owner Darren Ching. Walking into the gallery I was immediately struck by Tabitha’s Soren’s cinematic images from her “Running” series. One mi... [more]

This show has a wonderful flair for interest and relatability- each of the paintings and artworks do not carry so much mystique that it is impossible to understand what it is they are trying to portray. Yet, however enticingly grotesque and varied her works are, there is still this feeling that each has not be worked on with the best craft. While the disuse of white serves as a unifying factor between many of the artworks, it leaves the impression that the simple, acrylic on canvas, artworks ar... [more]

Here's the second half of my post on Lush Life, a multi-gallery exhibition curated by Franklin Evans and Omar Lopez-Chahoud featuring the works of 60 artists. Named after and inspired by Richard Price's 2008 novel set in the Lower East Side, the group exhibition is presented in nine neighborhood galleries - each focusing on one of the nine chapters from the book. Chapters 5-9 are on view at Y Gallery, Collette Blanchard, Salon 94, Scaramouche, and Eleven Rivington, respectively. The first and l... [more]

After the Armory Show (and some much needed sustenance) we headed down to Pier 40 for Pulse New York. In terms of tracking down San Francisco galleries participating in the shows in New York, I hit the jackpot.
Baer Ridgeway Exhibitions was showing several local Bay Area artists, including Brion Nuda Rosch (above) and Clare Rojas (below):
Work by Chris Duncan (below) was also on display:
My personal heritage obliged me to stop at the Lena & Roselli Gallerybooth, apparently the only Hungarian gallery at New Yorks contemporary art fairs:

"How Sweet It Is" by Gerard Haggerty

Like high fructose versions of Proust’s madeleines, Margaret Morrison’s sweet treats send our mind skipping back in time – specifically, back to childhood. When we were small, the kind of sugary goodies she paints loomed large, were prized and frequently forbidden; for after all, the injunction to “eat your vegetables,” did not include candy corn, except of course on that one anarchic day each year when children rule: Halloween. More often than not, Morrison’s imagery doesn’t evoke... [more]
