Group Show at Agora Gallery
September 8th - September 29th

9/11/09
Four colorful landscapes by Indian painter URMIL JAIN form a part of the onging 'MAZE OF MILIEU' exhibition at Agora Gallery. Notable amongst her works is the painting "Woman with Matka", a moodful village scene depicting a mystical confluence of the elements of nature with a wonderful backdrop of the moonlit sky. Whether real or surreal, the deep grays, blues and greens and many Indian red tones in her paintings will strike the romantic cord inside the viewer. Be it the "Environment" or... [more]

At Art Murmur there is a group show about once a month and the artist run the gamut but what was special about this show was the lack of figurative work. I was excited to see what some of the artist came up with. below is "remember" by Alex Feliciano and the flyer for the show featuring Paul Pitsker, as you can see two aproches to a seemingly simlple task.

The Photographs of Dominic Rouse
Fiction is the lie that tells the truth. Dreams are a reality that open windows onto a mystery.
Dominic Rouse, a contemporary digital photographer from England - now living in Thailand, likes to make images where illusion and reality overlap. His photographs put him in aesthetic relationship to Magritte, Dali, Ernst, Uelsmann, Arthur Tress and Maggie Taylor who are also surreal artists whose images are entertaining, visually dramatic and dream-like.

(photo)Realist Painting
by Jesse Hensel
David Kassan at Gallery Henoch
March 12th - April 4th

The problem with photorealist paintings is that they are entierly dependent on their source material. “Call Box”, “Peeling Paint and Through” succeed because the photographs have confusing content. In these works Kassan plays with the photorealist illusion by painting quasi-two dimensional spaces. These works focus on details in worn wheat pasted plywood (the source material has probably come from one of the city’s construction sites). The compositions are overly centrist, but here th... After the Armory Show (and some much needed sustenance) we headed down to Pier 40 for Pulse New York. In terms of tracking down San Francisco galleries participating in the shows in New York, I hit the jackpot.
Baer Ridgeway Exhibitions was showing several local Bay Area artists, including Brion Nuda Rosch (above) and Clare Rojas (below):
Work by Chris Duncan (below) was also on display:
My personal heritage obliged me to stop at the Lena & Roselli Gallerybooth, apparently the only Hungarian gallery at New Yorks contemporary art fairs:
The gallery... [more]

"How Sweet It Is" by Gerard Haggerty
by Margaret Morrison
Margaret Morrison at WOODWARD GALLERY
March 7th - May 9th

Like high fructose versions of Proust’s madeleines, Margaret Morrison’s sweet treats send our mind skipping back in time – specifically, back to childhood. When we were small, the kind of sugary goodies she paints loomed large, were prized and frequently forbidden; for after all, the injunction to “eat your vegetables,” did not include candy corn, except of course on that one anarchic day each year when children rule: Halloween. More often than not, Morrison’s imagery doesn’t evoke... [more]
