Brooklyn-based artist Jacob Williams' day-glo psychedelia already looks like a trip through a Disneyland ride on drugs, which makes Tim Regan's recent video piece (created to announce the opening reception for Williams' solo installation "Nightmare of the Haunted Buddha") a natural fit.
Set to a dramatic Psycho-esque soundtrack, the animation sets Williams' mountains, wild-haired women, and panthers in motion, which nicely establishes... [more]

Entering Larry Gagosian’s 24th Street gallery in New York can be a daunting experience. The value of most of artwork on display often dwarfs the average person’s annual salary. It is one of the few, possibly even the only gallery I have ever been to that will not allow you to carry in a cup of coffee with you. The security guards hover suspiciously and are quick to instruct you to back away from the artwork. Though this is not unique to any one gallery, the employees sitting at reception rar... [more]

Remarkable Maturation of A Former Collective Member

THERE'S ALWAYS A CONFLICT when an artist starts out from a collective of peers that, well, "collectively" work, and then moves on to build a solo career. It's true in music, theatre groups, and it's also true in fine art. The newly independent artist struggles to find her or his own voice, while the remaining members of a group can't help but feel left behind, even if they achieve their own success regardless, especially when the former partner walks alright on her or his own feet.
Since her depar... [more]

After the Armory Show (and some much needed sustenance) we headed down to Pier 40 for Pulse New York. In terms of tracking down San Francisco galleries participating in the shows in New York, I hit the jackpot.
Baer Ridgeway Exhibitions was showing several local Bay Area artists, including Brion Nuda Rosch (above) and Clare Rojas (below):
Work by Chris Duncan (below) was also on display:
My personal heritage obliged me to stop at the Lena & Roselli Gallerybooth, apparently the only Hungarian gallery at New Yorks contemporary art fairs:

Each visual artist in the surreal show at Ico Art & Music Gallery curated by gallery director, Skylor Brummans brings to mind the diverse flavors of a scrumptious scoop of spumone ice cream. This body of work presents a myriad of tastes and textures that define and elaborate upon the diverse aspects of human existence. The scope of artistic expression covers both the tangible and intangible universe. As a diverse collection of works which belong to the school of surrealism, the artists prompt th... [more]
