Meredith James at Jack Hanley Gallery- New York March 15th, 2014 - April 13th, 2014

The red-and-white checked, anamorphic floor of Meredith James’s video installation Delmar, showing through April 13th at the Jack Hanley Gallery, primes viewers to expect a puzzle. The video triptych behind the green velvet curtains at the far end of the gallery doesn’t disappoint. As a form, the triptych can be traced from the painted altarpieces of the early Renaissance to modern films. Before the now standard use of widescreen in film, Abel Gance made use of a triptych format to... [more]

Land-Art Legend Nancy Holt Passes On (1938-2014)
by
2/13/14 Posted 2/13/14

Sun Tunnels (1976) via CLUI Photographer, videographer, and sculptor Nancy Holt, 75, passed away Saturday in Manhattan after fighting a long battle with Leukemia. Holt, best known for her monumental sized sculptures in Southwest, was one of the first, and most notable, pioneers of the Land-art movement of the 60s and 70s. She was a rarity in her time, both as a woman in an art world still largely dominated by men and as an artist eschewing the gallery for on-site installations. Over her fifty-year... [more]

you are in brooklyn, no, not that brooklyn. we are talking about the real brooklyn that you can never fully know. concrete, cars, people, and places form an abstract pattern of unruly democracy. like an islamic tile if such a thing could be ugly. in this brooklyn, in a tiny garage, reside monumental pictures of otherwise imperceptible details. you are also in gilgo beach and it's bright. you are also alice, but you are not in wonderland. you have not grown small but the impressions you are confronted wi...            Over the past fifteen years, the “Ocean Parkway Serial Killer” targeted sex workers along this stretch of roadway, ultimately burying them at Gilgo Beach.  It is this series of events that Nick Kline examines in his exhibit, Gilgo Beach.  In a sterilized, clinical gallery space, the track lighting of a traditional gallery replaced with fluorescents, floor covered in stains that contrast the whiteness of the walls, Kline’s detailed, large-scale photographs create the air of a laborat... Able Fine Art Gallery in Chelsea, NY is presenting a very special two-person exhibition showcasing the exceptional paintings of Yang, Suk and Marsha Solomon. These two artists, while quite distinct in style, training, and approach are unified by the use of vivid, saturated fields of pure color, and the focus on beauty in both the natural and imaginary realms. The bright, color saturated paintings of Yang, Suk display references to sources as disparate as flowers, one of the most traditional sour... [more]
