"Loft in The Red Zone" Review  By Jill Smith   The scene of the crime is littered with dusty footprints, several lines of police tape bar entrance into enclaves, and hot, red halogen lights brighten an otherwise dim room.  These are just a few of the austere settings in a gripping exhibition on Wall Street entitled “Loft In The Red Zone.”   The brainchild of artist and curator, Marika Maiorova, the exhibition came about as a personal response to the remains of her lofted downtown st... Donald Judd at David Zwirner- 519 W. 19th May 6th, 2011 - June 25th, 2011
Posted 6/19/11

Donald Judd at David Zwirner Gallery is just one of three major sculpture exhibits now on view in Chelsea. This exhibit seen along side John Chamberlain's show (at the Gagosian through July 8th) and the Jasper Johns exhibit (at Matthew Marks through July 1st) make a fine medley of post-war American sculpture. A 2004 press release written by The Pace Gallery for its show "Donald Judd: Large Scale-Works" (also of late 80's work by Judd) quotes Dutch Art Historian Rudi Fuchs, who advises to view J... [more]

Duplicitous Icons of John Rusnak: Concerning a Unitative Vision by Mani De Osu In the Center of the Western World, John Rusnak is making stride in the miring world of which we call Art.  The appearance of his new series, Duplicitous Icons, amongst throngs of the non pervasive, unmoving and unchallenging slough of ideas showcased at galleries in the City of New York, has given a much needed exhalation after so long of holding one's breath waiting to see art that moves.  After so long... John Michael Rusnak's extraordinarily original and suggestive photo art murals entitled DUPLICITOUS ICONS will be on exhibit at the CATMChelsea Gallery 500 West 22 St. from March 3 to April 3. They fuse the two arts of photography and painting and viewed either individually or in their entirety the prints of this series makes us rethink elements of spirituality, sexuality, religion and the broader aspects of contemporary experience. They constitute a search for meaning beneath the surface of the du... by
Joshua Abelow at James Fuentes LLC/New York January 13th, 2011 - February 13th, 2011
Posted 2/13/11

A series of drawings on display through February 13th at the James Fuentes Gallery chronicles the struggles of The Artist, a wild, spiral-eyed, long-nosed character who resembles Joshua Abelow, his creator, reflected in a funhouse mirror. The Artist is always naked, and naked in a completely vulnerable way, his body articulated by clownishly rubbery contours and scribbled hairs radiating from his nipples and bunching in crude squiggles over his erect penis. A goofy invertebrate, The Artist wobb... [more]

I saw John Platt's work last year in a group show at Gallery 151 and was blown away! That piece sold before I had a chance to really consider it. Can't wait to see what they've put together this time. So happy to see Gallery 151 pop back up on the Bowery. I hope they become a permanant fixture. [more]

Rachel Wilkins at American Art Gallery October 5th, 2010 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Rachel Wilkins' Abstract Paintings are full of color, design elements, depth, and make you feel comfortable with them right away. Her paintings can fit in any type of home from a brownstone in the city to a modern home in the Hamptons. At her current solo show at the American Art Gallery she has a blue tryptych that catches your eye, and larger paintings that are just as compelling. This is a show to see. [more]

The work showing at Woodward Gallery, “Knox Martin- Woman: Black & White Paintings”-----The Black and White paintings of Knox Martin give to and take from the drawing that he does all the time, as well as the interchange between large paintings, portraits and sculpture. Martin quotes Matisse: “Painting is an expanded drawing.” New doors are opened from one work to another. In this exchange, there is the continuous exploration of the Masters. Basic to Martin's work is the perception that high art is the creation... [more]

Here's the second half of my post on Lush Life, a multi-gallery exhibition curated by Franklin Evans and Omar Lopez-Chahoud featuring the works of 60 artists.  Named after and inspired by Richard Price's 2008 novel set in the Lower East Side, the group exhibition is presented in nine neighborhood galleries - each focusing on one of the nine chapters from the book.  Chapters 5-9 are on view at Y Gallery, Collette Blanchard, Salon 94, Scaramouche, and Eleven Rivington, respectively.  The first and l... I walked into the studio to find Allison and her husband playing with their two beautiful children and enjoying light conversation with guests... On the walls hang large brightly colored canvases that seemed to reflect the zest for life that this family shares.  But only as I walked through the room and looked into the paintings and the stories they share did I realize that Allison must have taken a very long and difficult  journey to reach this happy place in her life. The work reflects the dispa... [more]

From AWANTEDMAG.COM interview with Daniel Alonso Artist Profile: Elizabeth Gregory Gruen 1.  Who or what were your earliest artistic influences? My Mother and Grandmother raised me – both are painters. They were my first introduction into visual thinking. The environment was ripe for experimentation and visual adventures that sparked my curiosity. With full encouragement my perception of space and proportion began at this time. Through careful critique, ideas were exchanged and a visual commun... [more]
