Brooklyn-based artist Jacob Williams' day-glo psychedelia already looks like a trip through a Disneyland ride on drugs, which makes Tim Regan's recent video piece (created to announce the opening reception for Williams' solo installation "Nightmare of the Haunted Buddha") a natural fit.
Set to a dramatic Psycho-esque soundtrack, the animation sets Williams' mountains, wild-haired women, and panthers in motion, which nicely establishes... [more]

"Hereros – Jim Naughten"
London-based photographer Jim Naughten first came across the Herero tribe and their eclectic sense of fashion several years ago while travellingin southern Africa. The images he captured on that trip were published in Marie Claire, which funded an exhibition that in turn landed him a major global advertising campaign. Yet Naughten knew he needed to return to Namibia to continue photographing. “I always had it in the ba... [more]

PHOTO DISTRICT NEWS – Exposures Section (February, 2013 issue)
For his new book, Jim Naughten created typological photographs of Namibia’s He rero people, whose military and civilian clothes are symbols of their historic struggle against colonialism. By Conor Risch
Many nations and cultures remember military heroes, great victories, and fallen soldiers through statues and monuments. On national holidays, war veterans don old uniforms and medals, or wear clothing decorated with patches... [more]

INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY – COSTUME DRAMA by Peter Popham
Colonial rule may be history for the Herero tribe of Namibia but the style conventions of their 19th-century German oppressors live on – albeit with a certain bovine-inspired twist…
When European women jettisoned their ankle-length frocks and the multiple petticoats that kept the frocks full and plump, they gained a great deal in the way of freedom. But they lost something, too – and what they lost is brought home by the magnificent... [more]

The stoneware sculptures of Sylvia Iskander evoke forgotten memories through ties to both the past and the present. Her clay and porcelain figurative sculptures, now on exhibition at Skoto Gallery in Chelsea, express monumentality and timelessness, finding echoes in human representation from time immemorial. Myth, history, environmentalism, and feminism all strike harmonic chords in the earthy abstract figural pieces which convey many and multi-layered messages. As with all sophisticated artwork, her s... [more]

This is best installation in public parks ever!

Krzysztof Wodiczko's Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection is the best public space installation in 2012, this is a must see! You can get a few minutes of a quick documentation at https://vimeo.com/53446621 but I suggest viewing the installation live. Like all of Wodiczko's work, this installation is politically charged, moving and mesmerizing. The brilliance is behind the images of 14 war veternas from Vietnam, Afganistan and Iraq, projected onto the cold bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln. As... [more]

The Metropolitan Museum's Ratti Center Textile Exhibit showcases a dozen or so exquisite lace pieces. Highlights include a cravat made for the wedding of Louis the XIV's grandson in the finest of French needle lace with a lavish hunting scheme featuring two children beneath a tree and a plethora of dogs hidden within lacy foliage.. One stunning piece is a border that has three dimensional flowers with layers of petals resembling Gros Point, but made during the late 19th century. Most Americ... [more]

The summer show, “Fresh: The Wall/The Page/The Internet”, at Klompching Gallery highlights the work of five contemporary fine art photographers chosen for their consistent vision and strong viewpoint by collector Fred Bidwell and gallery co-owner Darren Ching. Walking into the gallery I was immediately struck by Tabitha’s Soren’s cinematic images from her “Running” series. One mi... [more]

I AM THE OTHER: CORNELIA HEDIGER, DOPPELGANGER II — Ed Barnas
In Doppelgänger II, Cornelia Hediger continues her series of conceptual tableau vivants in which she plays all the parts. Each scene is broken down into equally sized parts and combined in a rectilinear grid, usually 2 wide by 3 high. Although precisely divided by solid black lines, the individual parts are slightly misaligned and sometimes out of proportion, creating an impression of an... [more]

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, September 7, 2011 Split Images, One Personality — Rebecca Horne
Photographer Cornelia Heidger left Switzerland for Harlem 10 years ago, and she feels more at home in New York. This is no surprise: As an artist, she is well acquainted with srong contrasts and dualities. In her composite photogrpahs, many of which play out a narrative between a main character and one or more doubles, Ms. Hediger plays all the parts, often confronting or consoling herself. On Wednesday,... [more]
