With Incarcerated Artists, Amy M. Ho Transforms Memory into Space   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e
by
Bobby Dean Evans Jr., Amy M. Ho at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary August 5th - September 29th
Posted 9/27/16

Visitors enter a dark gallery. As their eyes adjust they find themselves faced with a wooden frame structure occupying almost the entire space. They can walk inside of it or around it. Projected on one wall of the structure is a video of a white, humble room furnished with simple white stools, tables, and shelves. Every fifteen minutes a small origami crane mobile appears near a doorway, then disappears. There is something off-kilter with the objects on screen; they are life-size, yet they seem to... [more]

Wednesday Web Artist of the Week: Xaviera López   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

‪Xaviera López is a Chilean animator who was an early adopter of the short video app Vine. Alongside a few likeminded souls she helped reveal the creative potential of the deceptively limited platform. The challenge of packing ideas, depth, and emotion into a maximum of six seconds has lead to a new visual language that has spread across all motion-based mediums. López creates hallucinatory, visual poems that expertly utilize traditional drawing and animation techniques in a uniquely modern way. Her a... [more]

Ed Atkins, Antoine Catala, Ian Cheng, Josh Kline, Helen Marten, Agnieszka Polska at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden February 10th - March 12th, 2017
Posted 9/1/16

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A self-conscious avatar, pair of floating lips, and President Obama walk into an art show… What seems like the beginning to a potentially funny joke is actually half of the nearly mirthless exhibition Suspended Animation at the Hirshhorn Museum. Eschewing humor as a staple of animation and postmodern critical tool, the show soberly promises to introduce the audience to six contemporary artists using computer animation to “challenge c... Wednesday Web Artist of the Week: Michael Green   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

Portland-based Michael Green blends conceptualism, surrealism, and capitalism to create work that asks questions unique to our new digital world. His satirical GIF based on Jeff Koon’s Balloon Dog achieved global internet fame in 2014 when he put it on eBay in an attempt to make it the most expensive GIF ever sold. The original Koons sculpture had recently sold for $58 million so Green’s reaction became a perfectly timed comment on the value—both monetary and intellectual—of digital art more generally. Green uses th... [more]

The Return of the Hand: (Re)materializing the Everyday Object

Art and object are at a crossroads, the latter pressing upon the former in unapologetic terms. With these blurry borders, the object—once just a thing in the world, a commodity, really—is now widely considered art object par excellence, meaningful in its quotidian thingness, its ontological being now revelatory. That we’ve arrived at a juncture where the object now speaks is interesting to think through in terms of the potential epistemological offshoots. For instance, what know... [more]

İnci Eviner in Retrospective: “There Is No Woman, Only Symbols, Images, and Representations”   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

Inci Eviner at Istanbul Modern June 22nd - October 23rd

Only in silence the word, only in dark the light, only in dying life:bright the hawk’s flight on the empty sky. —The Creation of Ea Ursula K. Le Guin, Tehanu İnci Eviner is a gatherer: she collects the memory of crowds, unearths folk narratives, and retells their stories in her own language. She is a hunter: she traces misogyny, detects hierarchy, and targets it with the tools of a unique feminist visual lexicon. Although she doesn’t specifically identify her work as feminist, E... Montreal-based video artist Sabrina Ratté makes stunning electronic environments that recall (or predict) an era where society has perfected a clinical, aesthetic beauty at the cost of fleshy emotion. That is not to say her work doesn’t inspire feelings. It affects you on a primal level because these places feel like they exist deep within our collective, aspirational unconsciousness. There is a calm spirituality and reassuring familiarity here that, ironically, often only serves to e... [more]
