Alternative Waters: a Personal View of Recent Macri Portraits by Kenneth Radu
by
12/6/14 Posted 12/6/14

Part I People familiar with Adamo Macri’s portraits may well experience an aesthetic shock to see a picture of the artist with his eyes wide open. So many of his self-portraits depict the eyes averted, lowered, askance, or rarely looking directly at the viewer that I was taken aback by a recent picture, entitled Damo, 2013. There are a few other pictures in his Facebook oeuvre wherein the artist opens his eyes and stares out of the canvas, Self-Portrait, 2013, for example, but that is... [more]

This year’s Frieze New York fair sees the Projects portion of its programming celebrating FOOD, the historic restaurant-artwork hybrid most associated with artist Gordon Matta-Clark. While the Projects’ inaugural theme was turning Randall’s Island into a “fantasy world,” according to curator Cecilia Alemani, its second year focuses on “basic actions such as eating, drinking, speaking and praying… [engaging] the ritualistic dimension of the fair and the unique landscape of the island.” FOOD fits rathe... Food is Hot Right Now   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Food is pretty hot right now. Art is also pretty hot right now, perhaps hotter than it's ever been. And both appear to be crisis resistant. The fiscal point isn't however where the similarities end as, if we examine it, food production and artistic production seem to be intertwined in a strangely symbiotic, and occasionally dysfunctional, relationship. It is not as simple as stating that artists like restaurants and chefs like art, although these things seem to be true; there appears to be an aspi... [more]

A shockingly unique apothecary teahouse opened earlier this year in Los Feliz, California. The first of its kind, The White Lodge, is inspired in its pharmacy-counter, Dewey-decimal-drawer format by traditional Chinese herbal medicine shops and Mexican hierberias (herbal folk remedy stalls). It functions as if it were a bodega at some mythic crossroads simultaneously servicing Oaxacan priests, Oriental alchemists, Sufi shamen, Ayurveda practitioners, Haitian witch-doctors and dazzle-eyed misc...
