Andy Coolquitt at Lisa Cooley January 31st - March 9th

It's as if the artwork decamped from the gallery and took refuge amongst the luxury wares in the nearby designer outlet. I probably would not have noticed Andy Coolquitt’s installation in Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s hip boutique if I hadn’t been looking for it. The work’s prolix title, no I didn't go to any museums here I hate museums museums are just stores that charge you to come in there are lots of free museums here but they have names like real stores, suggests this Texas based... Seeking to postpone stock experiences and squeeze them all into our few days together, I avoided visiting the Tower until my mother arrived. We didn’t eat macarons at Ladurée, we didn’t get hot chocolate at Café de Flore, we didn’t jostle for selfies with La Joconde, but we went to the Tower. The visit itself is a symbolic gesture, because the symbol literally haunts no matter where you are in the world. Those curving lines, stretching skyward like a bit of pinch... [more]

Berlin’s contemporary art scene induces a headiness not recommended for those lacking stamina. We’ve only recently moved on from the monstrously huge offerings of Berlin Art Week, Berliner Liste, and Preview Berlin. Meanwhile, with its constellation of galleries – from Prenzlauer Berg to Neukölln – it sometimes feels like Berlin bequeaths a cynical gaze of see all-seen all to the regular gallery visitor with cold curatorial formations framing the city’s famous r... The Grayson Perry Tapestry or embroidery, preferably British-made; the haunting expression of a mining-town nightclub singer doing The Green Green Grass of Home; hunting tweeds and a monocle, and the Billy-Bob™ teeth listed on their website as Megabucks AKA Tombstones; a "Class War" t-shirt; more Burberry than a soap-opera actress with a missing septum. Definitely not a big, babyish candy-pink dress if you are a man – that is Grayson's thing, and he does it best. The Matthew Sm... [more]

Above and below are a couple of photos from my fashion blog. Sharing them here is unnerving because I work quite diligently to keep my art writing and fashion blogging practices separate, but as the line between personal / professional and online /offline is increasingly blurred, I think such dileneations will become increasingly untenable. I started this project because, in the course of tyring to describe fashion blogging to others, its various tenets, minor celebrities, and petty etique... [more]

I have been thinking, lately, about the intersections between fashion and art and popular culture, ever since reading what I thought of as a particularly asinine quote from the pop star, Lady Gaga: "I really love the lyrics to ARTPOP, the title track," she told the gossip blog, Just Jared, when asked which were "the most powerful lyrics" on her latest album. “'We could belong together, ARTPOP.' The words seem really simple but it’s through the creative experiences with my friends t... [more]

A young woman strikes a subtle, learned pose in a short, flippy, drop-waist tunic made of canary-yellow and white checkerboard polyester. She faces the camera head-on with poised stillness, like a model in a live fashion presentation. The image is cropped close around her body, but visible behind her are the whitewashed brick, exposed pipes, and crooked crawlspace grate of a suburban apartment complex. The dress is a facsimile of one from the Louis Vuitton Spring 2013 ready-to-wear show. Crit... [more]

Bert Stern at La Galerie de l'Instant July 11th, 2013 - September 25th, 2013

This is a terrible show and I loved it. By any of the criteria by which most of the galleries I normally visit judge themselves it was, what, I don't know what to say, a joke? A disaster? A farce? As appears to be my normal approach I'm going to talk about two things, the gallery first, then I'll get on to the artist… The gallery was a mess! There was Bert Stern's work on the walls, with one or two other random photos thrown in, as well as lots of other pictures from other photographe... [more]

Interview with Astha Butail

10/28/12 Posted 10/28/12

India, Oct. 2012: When I met Astha Butail, the contemporary visual of her red angular shirt, her poofy blue skirt and her lime green architectural clutch popped and played mischief with those around. But when we spoke, our words had little to do with fashion, though that is how Butail’s career began. Having encountered the realm of the conceptual, Astha Butail, an emerging artist with a keen eye for design, ventured into the ancient book of Vedas and the symbols and stories that fill their... Modern Fashion Photography Origins in the Camera Clubs of New York CIty
by
9/7/12 Posted 9/7/12

They may look tame today, even odd, but the photographs which came from the original “Camera Club Sessions” in New York City during the early 1950s not only mark the beginning of modern day erotic photography, from them emerged an unlikely fashion icon and star, Bettie Page. Nude photography in the United States was taboo and virtually unknown in the 1950s. Of course, there are some exceptions. The six photo “strip sets” sold in the back of men’s magazines and from under the counter in Times Sq... [more]

The Metropolitan Museum's  Ratti Center Textile Exhibit showcases a dozen or so exquisite lace pieces.  Highlights include a cravat made for the wedding of Louis the XIV's grandson in the finest of French needle lace with a lavish hunting scheme featuring two children beneath a tree and a plethora of dogs hidden within lacy foliage..  One stunning piece is a border that has three dimensional flowers with layers of petals resembling Gros Point, but made during the late 19th century. Most American m... [more]
