It is hard to take any exhibition with a grandiose title such as Photography Since the Millennium seriously, but then again, we are just fifteen years into this new millennium. And there have not been any major strides in photography since the new millennium except for, well, the death of analogue, and video is accessible to all. Goodbye film, hello pixels. Has there been one year since the new millennium that has not seen a new release of cameras with enhanced numbers of pixels? It is the mega... [more]

by Alexandra Chipkin On the evening of August 13th Guilmi seemed to be waking up. A cacophony of voices could be heard as townspeople and visitors gathered in a small piazza to listen to stories beingread aloud from inside a van. Later this van was opened up to reveal photographs lining the inside of the car: forming a small gallery. This gallery is in fact the perfect size for this town of no more than 200 people. The exhibition is called Avanzi, or leftovers. It is the result of about three we... [more]

Published in Art India Magazine Sourav Roy responds to Rameshwar Broota’s multi-generic journey over the last fifty years. Rameshwar Broota. Metamorphosis VI. Oil on canvas. 1986. Images courtesy Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi. Contemporary art discourse constantly refers to the male gaze as it stays trained on a female body: longing, projecting, mapping, invading. But when the male gaze turns inwards, towards its host male body, not... [more]

Art or Not?
6/26/15 Posted 6/26/15

Art or Not? Do you ever walk into a gallery, and feel like you're missing something? Art can sometimes confuse you. But what does make something art, or not? Is it context, words, or the audience, who says what flies in the gallery? Every week, we ask our readers to stop taking the art world so seriously for a little minute and try and play a game of spot the difference. This week: which of the unusual scenes below is documents a performance exhibited at a Welsh art institute? #1 Staged in the glo... [more]

International artist Tom Estes has been invited by curator Rebecca Feiner to act as Honorary Mayor of DEN-City1. Organised with Middlesex University, DEN-City1 is part of The London Festival of Architecture, a month long celebration of architectural experimentation, thinking and practice. I’ m sure I... [more]

A gaggle of young adults dressed to the nines on a street corner in Silver Lake, CA, is not an uncommon occurrence. It probably happens every day for some reason or another. It’s not so common, however, when the entire street corner itself is also dressed up. At the intersection of Bates and Sunset, you can see an entire block coated in white wash. The former Bates Motel and its surroundings, including fences, barbed wire, palm trees, and shrubbery, are all covered in an organic, lime-ba... [more]

A Change is Gonna Come Solo exhibition Marco Pezzotta (1985)Curated by Bogomir Doringer *** The artistic interest from Marco Pezzotta lays in examining different systems in which our identity is being either formed or changed. We stand in those systems as individuals or as part of a group. For describing and shaping these relations Marco Pezzotta uses objects that function as tools for a narrative. They appear from another space and time, floating between digital and physical. The artist creates... [more]

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any coincide... [more]

Art or Not?

Art or Not? One of the pictures described below is a genuine art work: every Friday the ArtSlant team asks our discerning readers to indulge in a game of spot the difference. The answer is revealed below. This week's theme is: playing with rope. #1 The artist's "performances with rope" forged a body of work conducted in experimental arts spaces in New York and Chicago throughout the 90s. Ancient art forms of rope typing from the East such as Shinbari and Hojojutsu bear a strong influence on the erotic cha... [more]
