Zakkir Hussain at GALLERYSKE - Bangalore > India
January 17th - February 27th
Posted 1/21/15

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any c... [more]

Art or Not?
by
1/10/15 Posted 1/10/15

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week, it's a bad hair day. #1 "Painted in two separate periods, this picture has a complex history. In its original state, it showed a pink-faced man, wearing a white shirt and a black suit. It was painted in a deliberately simple, naive style, using household, rather than oil paint, and incorporate... [more]

by

Parra, the Dutch dude who draws weird psycho-sexual creatures and provides creative input for a brand hipsters would murder for, has a new show opening at Jonathan LeVine New York City tomorrow night. His last show at the gallery was in 2013. The images released for preview show the artist moving forward with his strident Post-Pop graphics on canvas, always repeated in his distinctive black-red-blue-white palette. In many ways, Parra is the perfect Post-Pop figure, putting out commercial paint... [more]

Selected by London-based writer Philippa Snow, ArtSlant's Page 3 Pin-Ups is an acerbic take on the topless tabloid muse. The new weekly series is inspired by Playboy’s Playmates, Page Three, and Letters To Penthouse: for anyone who’s ever muttered the phrase “fuck contemporary art” and really meant it. Today’s internet-smashing pin-up is notable for the fact she has everything the modern gentleman wants: an ass that won’t quit, one that Sir Mix-A-Lot (O.B.E.) would love.... [more]

Today's Illegible Google Doodle Honors Wassily Kandinsky
by
12/16/14 Posted 12/16/14

We love a good Google Doodle art tribute, so we were psyched to find that today's Google Doodle honors the seminal Russian abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky on what would be his 148th birthday. We've been staring at the Google homepage, trying to parse out distinct letters from this particularly nebulous Doodle, which appears to rework many elements from the artist's Komposition VIII from 1923 (see below). The stylized logo is pretty much illegible, but we think this is a perfect Google tribut... [more]

Can graphic design ever truly be considered as a fine art form? Ren Adams has taken on that question by exploring the combination of printmaking and digital media into a collection of surreal two-dimensional images called “Alchemy of Image/The Language of Information Space.” These graphic pieces are striking aesthetically, yet leave something to be desired after initial observation. Adams blends an interest in history, science, technology, art, and basically everything about the... [more]

Voynich Manuscript. image via Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library We've never done this before. This year we launched our first-ever Curator's Open, where we asked you to use our massive database of art to curate our booth at EXPO Chicago.
