How do you like your Eggs? Controversial. This may be the answer the Milwaukee Art Museum would give after its recent acquisition of Eggs Benedict by Nicki Johnson. Although, rather than a lush scooping of hollandaise drizzled over ham hock, this dish consists entirely of a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI made from 17,000 coloured condoms. Many Catholics, not being the biggest fans of responsible spunk containment, have thrown in that extra delicious garnish — controversy. Even possibly going for... [more]

In celebration of Pride week, Christie's ran a special Warhol auction this week, making some 100 photographs and drawings available to purchase. Beyond the price tags, the works, many in the public eye for the first time, draw a passionate portrait of the underground LGBT scene of the '70s and '80s that was so much a part of the artist's life. They are a historical archive, charting a defining era of sexuality and social politics in American cities like San Francisco and New York City. Though t... [more]

Art or Not? Do you ever walk into a gallery, and feel like you're missing something? Art can sometimes confuse you. But what does make something art, or not? Is it context, words, or the audience, who says what flies in the gallery? Every week, we ask our readers to stop taking the art world so seriously for a little minute and try and play a game of spot the difference. This week: which of the unusual scenes below is documents a performance exhibited at a Welsh art institute? #1 Staged in the glo... [more]

On Saturday I go to the granite steps of the MCA with several hundred others for Chicago Artists Group Portrait, 2015. The weather’s kinda perfect: sunny, with big cadillacs of clouds rolling by every couple minutes to keep us cool. Down front Jason Lazarus, dressed all in white and holding a megaphone, paces, checks the time. Jason’s an artist/educator/proselytizer of collective action, a well-known/liked artist about town. We’re all here to become history, to legitimize our self-definitions, to e... [more]

Art or Not? Art Fairs make for perfect mockery material. Important art is often so confusing... Art or Not? "An intellect says a simple thing in a hard way, an artist says a hard thing in a simple way" Bukowski once said. The art world is full of both. Each week, we ask our readers to have some fun figuring out what is art, what is intellect, and what is just potted plants. This week: One of the images described below is the perfect artwork for a health goth's home. Can you tell which? #1 The Cuban artist's temporary installation El huerto di mi abuelita (2008) is a Proustian ouevre e... [more]

Welcome to the first installation of the Artslant podcast series, Working (it) Out. My name is Gillian Dykeman, and I'm a visual artist living in Toronto, Ontario. This summer, I am interviewing artists to ask about the role of audience in their practice. Each interview will begin with one question: "Does art require an audience?" This question came up in the Fieldwork seminar I took this year in the Masters of Visual Studies program at the University of Toronto. Initially, the answer seemed l... [more]

Art or Not? Ever stepped into a gallery or institute and thought to yourself, you cannot be serious? Without the "textual bikini" of art PR, does the naked artwork have any shape or is the joke on us? Every Friday for a laugh, we challenge you to figure out which image with its description has been forged by the ArtSlant team. This week: One of the below is a the result of a wear and tear of a gallery's floor, while the other is very realistic art work exhibited in a gallery space. Can you tel... [more]

In early 2012 Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós challenged filmmakers to create videos for their album Valtari. Photographer Ryan McGinley chose the song “Varúð,” an eight-minute dream narrated by a raspy head voice over an unsteady piano and transparent strings. In his video a barefoot girl in a glittery gold wig and a washed-out blue nightie skips through the streets of New York City in slow motion. She passes trucks, taxicabs, construction workers, and business men, m... [more]

Oberhausen, May 2015: The world of experimental and avant-garde film and video is relatively intimate, its natives comparatively few. A visit to Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage, Europe’s premiere short and experimental film platform, is a step into that world; it's a place populated once a year by an international cadre with a passion for moving image's oldest and most cutting edge format. Where else can you can you drink in a late night bar confident in the knowledge that any of the other 100+ pa... [more]
