Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Omar Chacon received his MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. His most recent body of work continues to be influenced by the intricate patterns and weavings found in the traditional folk art of South American indigenous peoples. Despite this reference, Omar is a thoroughly contemporary artist. His exuberant color combinations function also a visual metaphor for today’s multicultural world. He is fascinated by the rich diversity that exists across cultures, and in mixing the paint he is telling the soulful story of the “sancocho”, the collision of histories melting together in an orgiastic fashion. The resulting paintings are both impressively inventive with his unique use of medium and bursting with beauty.
