Sara Hendren's new paintings mark a synthesis of ideas in the history of science and epistemology. Drawn in part from classical illustrations like those of John James Audubon, her large-scale birds become reinvented icons or allegorical figures, floating among grids, timelines, and human bones. Her work engages the historical tradition of classifying biological phenomena, and it raises questions about the scientific stance toward knowledge that natural histories suggest: the many ways we know, or presume to know, about the physical world.
