Smilex, The Lite Ages continues on Phil James practice of reinterpreting the narrative of time and place through reworking familiar images ranging from old masters to religious icons and sporting greats. Delicate and detailed paintings are subtly applied onto vintage prints challenging the viewer to look beyond the surface image and into the depth of the artist’s imagination.
Through this process Phil James creates a world for his audience that is somehow familiar yet also bizarre. Toying with concepts and imagery from popular culture these images are at once accessible yet demanding of contemplation, they are cheeky and humorous but also reflect the intelligence and depth of the artist’s character.
Phil James has been a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, the Dobell Prize for Drawing, the Blake Prize and the John Fries Memorial Prize. He has also shown with many important galleries such as Eva Breuer, Australian Galleries Works on Paper, Ray Hughes Gallery, Alaska Projects and Damien Minton Gallery.
