TBD is an exhibition of recent works in a variety of mediums by the artist Paul Zografakis. Using the disjunctive devices of collage, this body of work reorganizes found materials into provocative and divergent compilations. The artist’s humorous investigation into visual vocabulary often takes the form of transposition, in which central aspects of an image are isolated, reordered or interchanged. The resulting exploding landscapes and otherworldly occurrences seem to collide in a vibrant and incongruous exchange.
By manually executing his photomontage, when digital manipulations may be easier, Zografakis’s collages are reminiscent of the handmade special effects in 1950s-era films. This methodology and the artist's emphasis on a low-tech sensibility are extended into all facets of his work. The site-specific installation PlaceistheSpace combines a surreal landscape, optical illusion, and a found image to generate a rudimentary but no less effective feeling of outer space.
As the exhibition’s title suggests, T.B.D. asks viewers to question visual certainties by representing a disjointed world where logic and anticipated behavior is turned on its head. This world is further displayed during the opening reception, when the artist will perform three acts written for him by artist Mark Mulroney.
Paul Zografakis is currently based in Athens, Greece. This is Paul’s second show at the gallery.
