Into the Woods focuses on the medium of wood as a conduit for artistic sensibilities, revealing how contemporary artists explore and push the possibilities of the medium for personal expression. A large-scale exhibition that extends across both the Main and Upstairs galleries, it presents sculptures made from retrieved and recycled wooden materials. The impressions of past histories therefore, through the affects of weathering as well as the scars of mechanical/architectural intervention all play a determining part in the identities of each artwork. Challenging and complimenting these time-based experiences are the innate natural, sensory qualities of color, grain and texture of wood itself. When considered concurrently these two signifiers create conversations around objectivity as well as the stoic qualities of natural materials themselves.
On display will be a diverse constellation of wooden forms that act as functional works, reliefs, freestanding sculptures and installation. Approaches to these forms will also vary, showcasing the rich traditions of woodworking as well as the alternative methods of the material through modern tools and techniques.
