> DESCRIPTION

Haunch of Venison is pleased to announce Liquescent, a solo exhibition by Bill Fontana. San Francisco-based artist Bill Fontana is renown for his pioneering exploration of sound as medium. Fontana uses highly technical processes of recording living sounds to heighten our awareness of our surroundings and the architecture of space. Fontana will exhibit four sound and video works or “sound sculptures” that were originally commissioned by the Somerset House in London. In each installation Fontana films details of various infrastructure in London, which he overlays with corresponding intricate sound recordings. In Tower Bridge Road Gap, Fontana films a close-up detail of London’s Tower Bridge and records the sounds of the Thames with hydraphones, resulting in high-pitched noises created by the passing of ships. The work reveals seemingly unidentifiable, yet everyday sounds that might otherwise be unheard to the viewer, and offer a meditative and transportive experience that is reminiscent of abstract paintings.
