Born in 1975, Bertiers lives and works outside Nairobi.
He has never left his native Kenya, but his obsession with current affairs, with 24 hour television news, radio, newspapers and magazines, have fostered a style of satirical painting that sits somewhere between Outsider Art and a more knowing socio-politically, image-based art, and gives his work enormous international appeal.
The picture-spaces are Brueghelian in their busyness, and honesty, and in their rich and beautiful construction. And they give room to the fools, imbeciles, heroes, villains, celebrities, world figures, and charlatans, the domestic bliss and discord, and the personal foibles, national tragedies and global events that crowd his thinking.
This will be Bertiers’s first solo exhibition in the UK. He has been exhibiting his work since 1990; and has previously shown in Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Los Angeles, Seattle, and across Africa.
