Revelers at the 17th-annual Santa Monica Festival will enjoy an eclectic day of music, dance, and visual arts by some of the most exciting performers and artists in the region. Celebrate Mother Earth and all moms this Mother's Day weekend while indulging in guilt-free shopping from vendors featuring earth-friendly artistic wares. Eat fresh foods from an assortment of local eateries and participate in art workshops using recycled and repurposed materials. The festival continues its zero-waste principles minimizing trash and maximizing recycling and is powered by renewable energy with both stages operating on solar power.
Headlining the day's entertainment on the Ocean Stage is Dengue Fever - whose psychedelic take on Cambodian pop has created quite a sensation, garnering global media attention and international acclaim. Front woman Chhom Nimol's hypnotic stage moves, based on traditional dances, and entrancing khmer lyrics have earned this band a cult following. Other performers on the Ocean stage include: DAFRA West African Dance and Drum Ensemble - performing and teaching songs and dances from Africa; Fishtank Ensemble - melding Romanian folk music with flamenco, Swedish folk and klezmer creating a Gypsy caravan sound; and Ballet Folklorico Nueva Antequera - presenting music and dance representing the seven regions of Oaxaca, Mexico. Emcee Tommy Lee, coordinator of the Music Center's Dance at the Music Center and Active Arts programs, will bring some downtown flavor to the Ocean Stage.
