Receiver will host San Francisco-based artist & designer Scott
Barry‘s multi-faceted illustrations, graphic crafts, video and
installation beginning April 5 through May 23, 2008.
Barry‘s humor-laden exhibit – “One Foot in The Other World
The Other Foot in The Other World” – nods at contemporary New York poet
Ted Greenwald while delightedly loping from bold ink illustrations
adorning book and album covers to video loops rich with culinary
“This show is really about things that
make me ’smile‘ – whether they are sights, sounds, thoughts or
otherwise. I‘m often creating imagery from a situation or circumstance
that I‘ve encountered physically or in a dream,” says Barry. “Most
recently I walked in to a liquor store in Las Vegas and a man was at
the counter buying a bottle of Courvoisier. [Sade‘s] `Smooth Operator‘
was playing on the radio in the store, and he looked at me and smiled
and his grill sparkled.”
Barry draws inspiration
from a variety of artistic and musical sources. While living in Holland
in 2007, the lush Dutch scenery, Oz inspired publications like Het, and
the work of Dutch designer Dick Bruna, were critical in the development
of his recent work. Also adding to Barry‘s visual and auditory
inspiration are the Psychedelic Japanese rockers, the Flower Travellin‘
Band, and the styles of illustrators Randall Enos and Brad Holland.
The artist will be in attendance and refreshments will be served.
