The Safe Show—Janne Larsen
January 29 - March 12, 2011
Opening Saturday, January 29, 2011 from 7 - 10 p.m.

Hi-Lite Gallery
533 S. Los Angeles St., 6th Floor   Los Angeles, CA  90013   310-795-1049

Los Angeles 01.11.11—Hi-Lite Gallery is pleased to present The Safe Show, Janne Larsen's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. As an installation artist and set designer, Larsen employs common materials in a provocative way—sandpaper as flooring, rear view mirrors as backdrop, and fish netting as sculptural content.

For The Safe Show at Hi-Lite Larsen will present a few different groups of paintings and sculptures. The Safe Series is based around a safe she inherited with no record of ownership or history. Larsen's figurative paintings use the safe as the centerpiece to explore possible owners, content and the nature of desire. At the opening on Saturday, January 29 a professional safe cracker will open the safe to reveal the contents or lack thereof.

Larsen will also present two other series of paintings and one group of sculptural objects. Gumdrop Mountain is an ongoing series of paintings that pays homage to the Mountain she grew up at the foot of. Another series, The Australian Women, Larsen painted at a residency in Coomba, New South Wales, five hours north of Sydney. These figurative paintings are portraits of "The Cowgirls," a group of women who come together twice a week to dance to Lady Gaga and other contemporary music.

Larsen has had a wealth of experience working in sculptural mediums as an installation artist and set designer. While The Safe Show at Hi-Lite will primarily feature her work as a painter, she will present a small selection of sculptural objects, waxen figures cast from molds and coated objects.

Throughout the show various events will be organized and open hours will be available. Please check thehi-lite.com for more information. The Safe Show is curated by General Projects and [name]. General Director of General Projects, Mathew Timmons is an artist, writer, curator and critic in Los Angeles whose recent book, The New Poetics, made the Small Press Best Seller list for December 2010. [name] is a collective dedicated to the optimal channeling of auspicious energies in any and all available circumstances. Its members include Spencer Douglass, Holly Myers, Paul Pescador, Catherine Taft, Mathew Timmons, Matt Wardell, and Kate Wolf.

Janne Larsen received her MFA in set design from CalArts in 2007. She has designed theater, opera, dance and installations throughout Los Angeles and New York. Her work has been seen at Symphony Space, Bootleg Theater, Pomona College, Cal State L.A., CalTech, CalPoly, Los Angeles Municipal gallery, Workspace, BetaLevel, Telic Art Exchange, Outpost for Contemporary Art and The Washington Museum of Art. She has taught with the Center Theater group, lectured at UCLA, USC and Moorpark College. She has recently designed and hand painted 60 paper costumes and designed the set for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" composed by MacArthur fellow, John Eaton and performed by the infamous Pocket Opera Players. In 2010, Larsen was awarded an Artist Residency in Australia to complete a new series of paintings.
