We are pleased to present the work of Jessica Minckley in her first solo at the Carl Berg Gallery. A recent graduate from Otis, Minckley burst onto the scene in the Rogue Wave exhibition at LA Louver in 2005. Minckley continues her exploration of the cultural myth and will include sculpture, painting and drawing in this exhibition. Her new body of work relies upon personal symbolism, but these specific anecdotes are obscured from plain sight. Minckley uses found and altered objects that are combined and recontextualized to present curious forms that are sentimentally charged with spiritual, domestic, biological and psychological suggestions.
The materials she uses include images from church thrift stores, medical instruments, containers for delicacies; birds meant to lure or scare as well as epigraph pages from books. Her method is a hermetic process that relies on a self-referential vocabulary of her own investigations and interests, which simultaneously opens up, asking that some sort of narrative be written by the viewer to connect them all cohesively. Minckley creates a rich approach to her art making that can seduce the viewer with its visual presence but also and perhaps more importantly she provides twists that compel the viewer to think and contemplate each work beyond its physical presence. |
