> DESCRIPTION

Martin Myers first became familiar with Tribes Gallery through a friend who used to read to the director and founder of Tribes Steve Cannon. He thought her descriptions of the gallery as a multicultural, non- commercial, edgy, threadbare townhouse floor in the East Village would be the perfect venue for displaying his newest body of work—as he was attracted to a space with an improvisational and homey salon atmosphere, knowing that his paintings would fit well into a lived-in and worked-in space.

In 2002, Martin took a hiatus from painting to pursue various design and architectural projects. These included a collaboration with an architect, an installation at the Kunstlerhause in Vienna, and a traveling European exhibition of built and unbuildable projects. His concept for the redesign of the Slovak National Gallery was selected as a finalist in an international competition, and his collaborative design for the Sandra Gering Gallery (in Chelsea) was recognized by the New York Architectural League. In 2010 he received a Pollock-Krasner award for his painting.

This current body of work is a continuation of themes always present in his work. Zippy color, precise hand-crafting, mixed affect. The imagery draws inspiration from urban architecture. Just as you are being sucked into the illusion of space, you see again that it’s just paint on canvas.
