This article originally appeared on May 20, 2010 in The Island. Michele Ellson, editor. Alameda Artists offer “Mirror Image” Frisbie St. curators Becky Jaffe, Lanell Dike, and Carrie-Andrea Kaye have put together a show with remarkable depth and breadth, including the work of two dozen artists. I had the opportunity to preview it, and be forewarned: “Mirror Image” – which features two artists with Alameda connections – is crazy intense. Demons are not willingly exorcised, and whether yours invol... [more]

by
JONaEON at Flying Saucers Caffeine and Art Gallery March 5th, 2010 - March 31st, 2010
Posted 3/12/10

By Melissa Jordan BART Senior Web Producer The year was 1978. Star Wars fever had swept the nation a year earlier, with fantastic characters like the droid C-3P0 capturing the public imagination. In San Francisco, an artist who went by the name JONaEON took on the persona of a silver android called SL7. In a performance art piece documented in photographs, SL7 traveled on the trains of Bay Area Rapid Transit alongside everyday commuters. That series of photographs is being shown for the fi... You showed some of these gorgeous watercolors before, Sam.  I wanted one then, I want one now.  I still can't afford them, or the fantastic video that went with them.  Why do you torture me so?  I'm a good person.  I work hard.  I really do think you should give me one of these because it will make my life so much better.   [more]

HOMESTYLE TINKERIN'  Ingenuity gathers the family around by Michael Gill Ingenuity organizer James Levin predicted that Ian Charnas' production Boltz — a campy mix of musical theater, dance and electrical tinkering presented by Case Western Reserve University — would be the iconic event that people remembered from Ingenuity 2009. Hopefully that's not true. The production's music and dance weren't badly realized, and the sustainability message was just about right for an after-school special or a com... [more]

On Saturday Artslant Paris writers Natalie Hegert and Kate Lemay hit the town to catch a few openings. The time change had thrown us off, and we only made it to one good show, but it was an excellent one. This show is a lot more fun than the description would have you think.  The large piece in the back room alone is worth a visit to the gallery.  Two huge water-filled heavy glass tanks on tall pedestals each contain a miniature mountain range.  The mountains are covered with minute air bubbles created when the tanks were filled with water.  A bright light above each tank creates reflections of the mountains both within and between the two tanks, which means the piece expands and changes as you mo... Da_bearing-6 Darren Almon's Video Bearing
by
Darren Almond at David Patton Los Angeles November 22nd, 2008 - January 10th, 2009
Posted 1/6/09

One can enter the loop of Darren Almond's 35 minute video 'Bearing' at any point; the viewer is bearing witness to a Sisyphean task. In the caldera of an Indonesian volcano, workers lay sections of pipe to channel the sulfur-laden steam venting from cracks in the earth. In one scene they 'seed' the plume to form precipitate, creating a hiss as sulfuric acid is made. People enter and disappear into the clouds, chipping away at the bright yellow rocks. For the extended middle section of the video,... [more]
